Things I Have Learned While Cutting Squares, and a giveaway

Mary, The Curious Quilter

My head is full of squares. It must be time for a giveaway!

(Giveaway is now closed.)

If you want any pointers about cutting fabric squares, just ask me. I could be a professional square cutter. I am positive that I have cut at least 150,000 squares so far, and suspect it may be many, many more. I have cutting and storing down to an efficient system!

My sons think that I am obsessed with squares. Probably true. It started years ago, when I first started cutting two-inch squares and saving them in shoe boxes. Every cotton fabric that I have sewn with in the last 35 years is represented in those shoe boxes. I have no die cutter, but I should own stock in rotary cutting blade and mat companies.

Classic Ten Inch Squares Quilt

A Classic Squares quilt from ten-inch squares.

When I took stock of my non-cut stash a few years ago, I realized that it was out of control. So I cut ten-inch squares and taught “quick quilt” classes for teens. That was the start of the Classic Squares Quilts. Of course I started a bin of ten-inch squares then. When charm packs came on the market, I thought, hmmm, five-inch squares. Soon bins were being filled with those as well.

I do like to piece with triangles and other shapes as well, but my seemingly endless supply of squares does get prime time quite often. I may have to declare a “square-free month” soon, to remind myself that I do enjoy piecing other shapes.

Despite all that, I spent a good part of last weekend cutting fabric squares. I thought about the questions I get here, from people thinking about creating postage stamp quilts. I decided to share some of what I have learned about gathering, sorting, planning, and otherwise obsessing over little fabric squares. (Actually you have plenty of thinking time while cutting squares, but be careful. Too many wandering thoughts occasionally make for a ten-by-nine-inch “square.”)

Two Inch Treasure Quilt #1

Two-Inch Treasures make Big Hug Quilt #1 a ton of fun. Click on the photo to take a closer look.

Two years ago I decided that it was high time to sew something with all those two-inch treasures, and knew that I wanted to do a quilt with as few fabric repeats as possible. That is when I realized that my obsessive cutting and haphazard storage method had created a nightmare. Before I could create my first “Big Hug,” I had some shuffling to do. Trust me, if you want to create more than one postage stamp quilt, some planning before you start saving squares can be a very good idea.

If you are planning to make only one postage stamp quilt, and want no repeats, of course you simply save one little square of each fabric. There are a couple of exceptions. You may elect to cut several from a small-scale novelty with many different featured items. Squares cut from different parts of a very large-scale print may appear to come from unique fabrics.

Likewise, if you are making one quilt, but are okay with repeats, cut the number you are shooting for, then store them in sets with one of each fabric. This way you will have sets with no repeats to work through, and avoid getting all four little frog squares in one corner of your quilt.

A few Two Inch Treasure boxes

I have lots of these shoe boxes under my bed!

But I learned the hard way that, if you want to make several of these quilts, some planning as you cut and store makes your life a lot easier later. I started cutting 24 of each fabric, tidily stored in bunches. Each shoe box had up to 150 of these bunches. When I was ready to start sewing, I had to go pull one piece out of each little bunch, which was very tedious, and linty.

To resolve this, I had to rearrange all my squares. I made piles with one of each item from a given shoe box in it, and popped little bits of paper between each set. That way each shoe box had 24 sets of unique fabric squares in it. I labeled each box, set A, set B, etc. When I was ready to pull for a quilt, I just needed one or two sets from each box, depending on the size of the quilt.

So many squares, time for a giveaway! After I had ten boxes like this (told you I was hooked) I realized even that was annoying, having to drag out all the boxes over and over. So I pulled sets from each box and put them in one gallon plastic zip bags. I still labeled these 1, 2, 3, etc., and left some room. Then, as I cut new squares, I added to each bag. I got in the habit of stacking fabrics and cutting in sets as I went, so I had very little sorting to do. I kept a couple of shoe boxes for extras, as sometimes I had tons of a given square.

I have made four quilts from these bags, and still have twenty bags nearly full, with about 4,000 two-inch squares in each. Some of the bags are labeled for the person they will eventually belong to. That allows me to customize a bit as I go. For instance, one future owner of a “Big Hug” is a cat fanatic. When I fussy-cut cats from a scattered cat print, that bag gets one of each cat. But another person, who is not so fond of cats, has only a couple of cats in their set.

Yes, I have started to do this with the five- and ten-inch squares as well. And no, I do not plan to make twenty more two-inch treasure quilts, so I have been parting with some of the squares. The bags make it easy to ensure that the person getting the squares has a great variety.

Some Other Random Thoughts About Cutting Squares:

Cutting More Squares, Giveaway Time

I keep cutting squares. Time for a giveaway.

  • From the average fat quarter you can cut two ten-inch squares, four five-inch squares, ten two-inch squares and still have some nice bits left to go in the fabric-string bin.
  • Fussy-cutting specialty fabrics is well worth the effort, unless you are cutting squares smaller than two inches. At that point each square tends to become a color point, not a feature, and it is difficult to find novelty prints that cater to that tiny scale.
  • Fussy-cutting a couple dozen squares can be fun, but I find doing a hundred in one sitting to be rather stressful. Spread your fussy-cutting time out!
  • Those leftovers from fussy-cutting can be diced up into small squares as well, as postage stamp quilts can use a real variety of fabrics.
  • Keep a lint roller handy! Unless you are a magically meticulous cutter, who never strays from cutting on true grain every time, you will have lots of little threads floating about.
  • If you are acquiring new fabrics for cutting squares, it pays to go way outside your normal comfort level. It is the wild variety that makes scrappy postage stamp quilts really fun.
  • Do not hesitate to cannibalize used clothing items that have meaning to you. In the bags of squares assigned to my family members, I have snippets from a dashiki that one son wore to prom, and some bits from skateboard shorts my other son tie-dyed and sewed when he was eleven.
  • Perfection is a lovely idea, but when you cut squares over range of time, you will have tiny variations in your accuracy. No biggie, in most cases you can just use them the way they are.
  • At some point, start sewing! Even if you are planning to cut many more pieces, having a couple of blocks done can be very inspiring.

Did someone mention a giveaway? (Giveaway is now closed.)

Well, yes! I love to share these fun squares! Let’s make it a Winner’s Choice: The winner can pick from a set of 80 five-inch squares, or choose a set of 500 two-inch squares. Either set will have no duplicates, include a wide variety of fabrics, and have many novelties. All fabric squares are cut from new cotton fabrics which were washed before cutting. I will email the winner to find out which set they choose.

Although I have nothing when compared with your fabric bits, I have a few boxes of charm squares of my own. I have a bin of: 5 inch, 2 inch, 2.5 inch, 3.5 inch, and a pile of 6.5 inch squares. The 6.5 inch squares are all from novelty fabrics which I use for donation quilts for children. I made 4 children’s charity quilts recently so that bin is being slowly tamed. I have also been cutting fabric I no longer love enough to use as a featured fabric in a quilt into 2.5 inch strips to take advantage of some of the great jelly roll patterns that are available. I still have boxes of charm squares from Y2K swaps that are waiting for my attention.

I am hoping to start a postage stamp quilt this summer, but still need lots more 2 inch charms. I’m afraid if I don’t start soon, it will never happen. If I don’t have enough 2 inch charms by July 1st (I need a deadline), I will alternate them with WOW squares.
Thanks for blogging about your fabric obsessions, it helps me feel better about all the bits of fabric I have squirreled away.

There is absolutely no way I can resist a giveaway involving 2″ squares! LOL

  4. DianeH says:

Fantastic giveaway, thank you. I have always enjoyed making ‘just squares’ quilts – I find them very calming. I would use these to make a lap size quilt for a friend.

  5. Sarah C. says:

Thanks for all the tips! I, too, cut lots of squares but we use them up as fast as I can cut them in our quilt ministry. So we’d love a chance to win some of your lovely squares!!

  6. Claudia E says:

Wow! You have done the hard part. Would love to win and make a quilt from your stash. Thanks for the chance to win.

  7. SewLindaAnn says:

Oh my gosh! I cannot believe how many squares you have, it’s crazy good!! I’m not sure if I’d want 2″ or 5″ but I’m always up for the squeal of getting fabric in them mail. I’d probably make HST’s and play with a setting. I love them. You are too funny, “cannibalize” used clothing was a good laugh. It seems we never have enough, I guess that’s why we call it our obsession.

  8. Mary says:

Wow, that’s a lot of squares you have cut! I would be tickled pink to win either set, but I would like to do a postage stamp quilt, so the smaller ones would be a great start to that.

  9. jane says:

Wow, I’ve never seen so many little squares altogether, they look fabulous, and it would have to be a wonderful quilt

  10. Sarah Schutte says:

Pick me, please? My obsession? Well, I have a huge ‘collection’ of Hello Kitty fabrics that my hubby things is pure junk. I hold on to them, though, as I have purged my home of all other signs of Hello Kitty!

  11. Barbara says:

well, I am attempting to make the quilt that you did – and 4000 squares are a LOT LOL

so yes, I would love to have some of yours !

  12. Sunnybec says:

Gosh don’t your hands hurt!!! I am straightening 60 QST and have only done 40 and my hands ache. I have a few 2.1/2 inch squares I have cut up and put in a plastic bag, but, as I only started quilting last August I have a long long way to go before I have enough for a quilt.

  13. michelle C says:

Oh my goodness. I admire your square organization system . I too have an obsession with 2 inch squares. They also come in handy when I have an urge to paper piece hexagons.

  14. Janet says:

Firstly I have to tell you that the shot of you with just your eyes and hair showing looks uncannily like my older sister – it startles me everytime I open your blog. My obsession is with using little tiny scraps of fabric that most other people throw away. I have so many scraps of fabric in a huge variety of shapes and sizes that I could make quilts out of them for the next three years or so without needing to buy anything. But what would be the fun of that. And I am not organized like you are. Thanks for the chance to win.

  15. blessedalaskan says:

I love quilting, but give myself too little time to do it, despite having a lovely studio. I recently decided, if the Hubs in tinkering in the garage, then I will tinker in the studio.
My stash description requires a quick story–Five years ago, as we were preparing to move, I was packing up my sewing room, and much to my surprise I had 12-24″ square boxes of fabric and quilting supplies, OMGosh!! I vowed that while my stash was packed up (2-3 yrs) I would not buy any fabric. ;o) I did pretty good at keeping that promise, ’cause I started knitting. Now I have a yarn stash as well.
If I were to win your drawing, I think I would choose the 5″ squares. Yup, all those tiny squares in your quilt is so inspiring, but I’d go with the larger pieces. Thanks and happy piecing.

  16. Kathleen C says:

If you’re obsessed, it’s definitely a good obsession. Your giveaway is great: fabrics that another quilter has chosen are always fun. And I’d go for the larger squares :). Thanks very much.

  17. Allison Gougeon says:

WOW! I would love the small squares! A postage stamp quilt is on my list of quilts to make. Thanks for the chance to win! Allison gougeonathome@charter.net

  18. Trish L. says:

That’s alot of squares to give away – that’s wonderful for us to have a chance to acquire them. Thank you!
I think I would choose the smaller squares because I think a postage stamp quilt would look awesome and I don’t have one yet.
I think you’ll get lots of comments for this giveaway – good luck everyone!
    Hugs, Trish (newlapp@pa.net)

  20. Rebekah says:

    Yay, how fun!
Well, I can see myself being to this point in a few years! Cutting those teeny squares is super addictive!
I’m really glad you posted this because I already have a few planned, and right now my storage system is very messy.
I also loved the tip on sorting so similar squares won’t end up in the same quadrant. I am going to reread that section but I may email you for further elaboration!

  21. Alannah says:

I would love to have the little squares!! I actually want to use the squares to make a quilt that is just random!!! I will even put some of mine in there!!! I hope I win!!! YAY FABRIC!!!!!!

  22. Lee Ann L. says:

I would go for the larger squares to make a scrappy quilt with. Not sure what pattern though yet. Thanks for a chance to win!

  23. robin says:

Wow you have a lot of squares! Do you dream about them? 🙂 My favorite gadget is my beloved rotary cutter.

  24. robin says:

Okay scratch my last comment – I’m entering two giveaways at once here and got mixed up! (duh!) If I won, I’d choose the little squares and make a quilt. Maybe I’d pick out the squares with pictures of objects in them to save for an I Spy quilt some day. 🙂

  25. robin says:

I posted on your Facebook page. 🙂

  27. Val Laird says:

Wow, I love the way you have laid all those gorgeous squares out – so colourful. It looks like a quilt in itself. All I can say is, you must have an awful lot of patience to keep cutting those squares. I’ve thought about doing similarly for quite a while, but it still remains a thought!

  28. Dian Schwanz says:

Thanks for the chance to win some squares. I have just started to “collect” the 5″ squares and the few I have are lonesome! Would love to give your a good home.

  29. PB from MN says:

I like working with squares. With all of the different prints you can come up with some very nice designs and colors.

  30. Martin says:

OK, Let’s get this straight. You have thousands of pre-cut fabric squares laying about in your home, but you need to go cut squares for a flannel quilt that you must do this week? I would think you would just pull out some of what you already have!!

But that’s ok, more to share with ME when YOU do not use them! Count me in!

  31. cindy says:

I’ve bought several of your 10″ collections on eBay, but would love to start sewing with the 5″ squares. Thanks for giveaway, and all the knowledge that you share.

  32. Oh my goodness! All that square goodness, please let it be mine so I can make pillows or a quilt, or a patchwork bag. Awesome!

  33. Marcia W. says:

Wonderful idea.s. Of course, I would make a quilt. Maybe could “borrow” from my mother to have enough to make a larger quilt. 5 inch would be a good place to start. Thanks for sharing.

  34. Shari says:

I love working with squares and rectangles – and I really appreciate your showing us a good way to cut the FQ for a variety of squares. My uncut stash is totally out of control and you’ve given some really good advice here. Thanks!

Thanks for the chance to win some of them….

  38. Cecilia says:

I am just starting to organize my scraps by sizes and I appreciate your tips on organization. I have an Accuquilt GO! so cutting the squares are a little easier for me. Thanks for such a great giveaway. I would love to make a postage stamp quilt one day.

  39. Patty says:

I would love to make a postage stamp quilt. Yours is wonderful.

  40. Patty says:

I would love to make a postage stamp quilt. And you have done all the work cutting out the squares.

  41. Hannele says:

    Hi Mary,
what a wonderful challenge, you have done the most time-consuming part of the work already! I would probably use your 5-inch-squares for a twister quilt 🙂

  42. Barb Colvin says:

Wow! 35 yrs! I have a small collection of 2″ squares that I plan to make into a postage stamp quilt some day. Obviously, I need more 😀 Winning a set of your treasures would be a great help.

  43. Laura M says:

I’ve wanted to make quilts out of the ‘Nickel Quilts’ books for many years now – but my sewing time and stack of 5″ squares are both lacking!

  44. Alice Hamilton says:

    Oh, Wise One
Your storage and cutting ideas are fabulous. I recently received a wooden library card catalog cabinet with about 12 drawers in it. My lovely packages of 2 inchers nest in the drawers beautifully! I don’t have quite enough for one of those BIG HUGS yet! Have a lovely day!

  45. Lisa Marie says:

I love the wide variety of prints in your squares. Like many quilters I love fabric, but for me I hate to cut it up until I’m ready to use it. What if I cut 5″ squares and later decide I want 6″ squares or strips or something? I do love scrap quilts, but generally cut only when I am ready to start. Which means I spend a lot of time digging through my fabric stash. Maybe not efficient, but it is so much fun to dig!

  46. Angie says:

First time I saw your postage stamp quilt, you got me hooked!!! I just started on last weekend. I cheated however and brought some already cut from ebay…some not enough.. So then I started cutting up some of my scraps into the 2″ squares and could not stop. I didn’t have enough of one color I wanted to include, so I ran to Hancocks and got more. I have 2 – 16″ squares completed and bunches of them sewn together in pairs…. So I guess I NEED more…..

  47. Nancy says:

Wow, I’m just very impressed with how you arranged both sets of squares. It looks a little like playing with dominoes. And what could be better than fabric dominoes! I love 5″ squares and love using them in quilts of all kinds. One can NEVER have too much fabric, can you?

  48. Donna says:

Nifty! I love charms! Hey, readers, I nominate Mary for the Postage Stamp Queen!!

  49. VickiT says:

Oh my gosh, you are amazing. That is a lot of little squares but SOOOOO colorful. How fun. I have recently begun buying charm packs and then realized myself that I have SO much fabric that I could just start cutting my own charm squares with my massive collection of fabric. My husband liked that idea very much and did a search himself to help me in finding a 5 inch square template so the squares would be uniform without any wobble cuts that I might do in using a straight ruler alone. But then I found a 5 1/2 inch square template/ruler at a local shop we were in and grabbed that. Now I realize that I have the shape cut and could really do it very easily with that too. He did like the thought of me using the fabric I’ve been buying though rather than to keep buying charm packs. Of course, I did have to explain the need for the purchase of NEW pretty fabrics a little more. LOL Don’t we all NEED the newest released fabrics?
Anyway, I am crossing my fingers for this giveaway. I would LOVE to win the 5 inch squares. I wouldn’t turn down the 2 inch squares either however as I have seen the postage stamp quilts and think it would be fun to make a few of them too.

And thank you for such a great article about cutting squares. Great job!

    • Don’t tell your sweet hubby, but I think your ruler will be easier! Even if I am just cutting one charm, I use the ruler. I love the square templates for trimming blocks though!

  50. Dot says:

What memories. I’ve never made a postage stamp quilt, but I remember well my grandfather telling stories about sitting under his mother’s quilting frame, cutting two-inch squares and sorting them into piles while she quilted her latest creation. I guess maybe this is the nudge I need to recreate that part of my heritage–thanks for the chance!

  51. aspenhill says:

Great giveaway! I’d pick the 5″ charms, I think. I have my own obsession with fabric. I hate to cut it! Already cut into is fine, but give me a 2 yard piece and I’ll always be afraid to cut into it unless I can use most of it up with what I’m working on – I’m afraid that I’ll find a ‘better’ use for ‘more’ of it later! Deb

    • Whereas I come home, wash, dry, and press the fabric, and promptly cut out at least a few little squares before putting it away for another project! Heck, especially for unusual novelties, I have been known to buy 1/8 of a yard just for a few two inch squares!

For me, saving fabric for a ‘better’ use may just mean I never use it!

  52. Cathy Cavagnaro says:

I thought that I had a pretty good collection of fabric, but I don’t recognize your fabrics. WOW! The chance to win a whole new treasure of fabrics is awesome. I would love to add your 2″ squares to mine and then give them all to my 85 year old mother who is just finishing a quilt of 1″ squares. She is awesome. And so are her quilts.

  53. What a great giveaway. I’ve been meaning to start a leader ender quilt and this would be a great beginning. Thanks for the opportunity to enter your giveaway!

I’m just now getting to the point to where I think I need to cut my fabrics into squares in order to eliminate all the senseless disorder of my stash. And I loved looking at all the pre-cut squares you have stored in various areas. Such stunning quilts you’ve made – no wonder you love making such beautiful quilts. This is an awesome giveaway. Thanks for the opportunity.

  58. Carol says:

I also love squares. I have lots of them already cut and in little zip lock bags. They do come in handy for small projects or for scrap quilts. I would love to make a postage stamp quilt someday, but for now I am content to just use the larger ones. Thanks for t he giveaway. It would be awesome to have some of your collection.

  59. Anna McD says:

I’m terrified of 2″ squares …use lots of 5″ though…maybe it’s time to conquer my fear…love your quilt……..thanks for a chance to win

  60. krisgray says:

WOW! So many squares – that’s a lot of time, too! I’ve just started to cut up my scraps into squares and strips. However, I like to do small things like tissue holders, coin purses, etc., so I tend to only cut the smallest of my scraps – smaller than 5×7. Guess I’m still try to figure out what I might use them for someday. Cutting from the small pieces and left over binding strips means I have small squares – 1″-2.5″.

  61. Mary Lou says:

How very cool!! I’ve just begun to cut fabric! You are the queen! I’d love the 2″ squares for any one of Bonnie Hunter’s scrappy creations, many of which start with that size! Thanks a million!
    Blessings,
    Mary Lou

  62. Annmarie says:

Thanks so much for your post. I’ve always thought postage stamp quilts looked scary but now you’ve got me thinking! Yours are beautiful!

  63. Sallie says:

Your postage stamp quilt is wonderful! I would choose the 5″ squares. Thanks for the giveaway!

  64. jodi meenan says:

Wow, thanks for all those great tips! I started cutting 2″ or 2 1/2″ squares but haven’t gotten too far! I would love to make a postage stamp quilt, and your squares are fantastic!

  65. Jacque says:

Thanks for the wonderful tips on organizing the squares… I’ve been stymied in my efforts to put some bags together like those, but now I think I can implement your system and get it done! I would love to use those five inch squares to make a quilt for the Modern Relief for Japan effort!

  66. Donna says:

I don’t think I’m the 2 inch block quilter, but I would love the 5 inch blocks. I love your postage stamp quilt, but I don’t think my sanity would remain intact if I tried to make one for myself. Thanks for the chance to win them.

  67. MoeWest says:

I don’t have a big fabric stash yet, so I would love to win some of your squares to add variety to what I have. Thanks for the giveaway.

  68. MoeWest says:

    I tweeted about your giveaway.

  69. Although I’m completely mad about 2 inches squares, the 5 inch would make a very nice quilt.

  70. Jennifer says:

Oh my gosh. I cannot IMAGINE cutting that many squares. But I’d love to win some! : )

  71. Jennifer says:

Squares have always been my favorite shape. Beautiful quilt and thanks for the chance.

  72. mary baker says:

Wow, that is a lot of cutting! I love the 5″ squares b/c my children love to sew with the larger squares. The 2″ are cool and who ever turns down free fabric!?!

  73. Daniela Martisovitsova says:

Thanks for the chance to win. Once I made a quilt with 2000 2″ squares – to celebrate year 2000. I think it would be great to repeat something similar (when I don’t have to cut new fabric, I still have leftovers from the 2000 y. quilt), Either 5″ or 2 ” squares would be fine. I prefer, though, 2″.

  74. Linda says:

    Fun giveaway!! Thanks for sharing!

  75. treva says:

I am so pleased to get to read your blogs and see your beautiful stash of cut fabrics. I have always been obsessed with fabric..Each time I go shopping even w/my husband, he’l say ‘where are you going to be?’ I always say ‘you’l find me in the material’..Even on vacation, I have to check the fabric dept. out and almost always come home w/a new piece of fabric..I just love looking at all the bright pretty colors in your stacks..they remind me of all the beautiful colors we are seeing outside in the flowerbeds in the spring..You have a wonderful collection and its very nice of you to want to share them with someone..If I had to choose between the two sizes, I’d go with the 2in. squares. Your quilts are awesome..Thank you for what you are doing..T.W.

  76. Linda L says:

Wow! You are one busy lady to cut, sort, resort, etc! The larger squares look great!

  77. Karen says:

Thanks for all the tips and the chance to win! I love the look of these quilts!

  78. Jennifer says:

I was sent here from Stray Stitches and I love your blog! I would be hard pressed to choose from the 5 inch squares and the 2 inch squares. I collect charm packs like nothing else but am also intrigued with the idea of making a charm quilt out of smaller squares. Thanks for the chance to enter your giveaway! 🙂

Since I don’t know what fabrics I have or where I’ve hidden them, I must have too much.

  80. Sandy Narayan says:

Wow! That’s a lot of cutting! I would love to win the 2 inch squares. I have really been wanting to do a postage stamp quilt. Thanks for the opportunity to win!=)

  83. I just found your blog from Stray Stitches and I have to say I love it! I like to cut bunches and bunches of 2.5″ squares from whatever fabric comes into the house. Have I done much with them? Nope, and that doesn’t bother me either. I love having a little bit of all the fabrics that I have bought at one time or another.

Not sure if I will ever make a postage stamp quilt but I might make a few postage stamp tote bags or placemats.

  84. Carla says:

Wow – that’s alot of little squares on your quilt! I haven’t worked with squares that small yet… Thanks for a chance to win your awesome giveaway!

  85. quiltzyx says:

A postage stamp quilt is on my ‘wanta do’ list…this could make it rrreeaallllyyy easy on the cutting part!

    Thanks for the chance. 😀

  86. Wow what a great giveaway. I would love to have the 5 inch giveaway. I have an obsession with fat quarters and 2 2/1 inch squares. I have collected a lot of 2 1/2 inch squares to someday make a hexi charm quilt…..yes all by hand!

  87. Bunny says:

Just came across your site and wow! That’s a lot of squares. I’m a “scrappy” quilt kind of gal so I would love to win those 2″ squares and put them to good use.

  88. Cassie says:

Wow, these are awesome… I don’t know which one I would choose… leaning towards the 5 inch squares… but I also have a lot of 2 inch squares… but I am using most of them for a hexie quilt. I found a bunch of squares precut at a thrift store, which was awesome! I find the cutting to be relaxing.

  89. wordygirl says:

What fun. I’d choose the five-inch squares, and get busy making doll quilts for my niece’s daughters. Your choice of fabrics looks like it includes lots of squares that could almost be I-spy types, which is fun for the kids. Thanks for the giveaway.

  90. Sue Goodin says:

I love both. How about if I’m the lucky winner you just surprise me…..

  91. Tanyusha says:

If I win, I’ll think how to use these fabrics. May be to end my cross stitching.

  92. Carmen says:

This is fantastic! I am also slightly obsessed with squares but have come to work with a different system. As I do use some other shapes as well I tend to cut 4 5in square from each new FQ that I buy to add to my charm variety. When I have enough different fabrics together I tend to make a srappy quilt. Your system looks far more organised. Thanks for the giveaway.

  93. So many squares. I’d love the 5″ squares, but, I sure wouldn’t say no to the 2″ squares. I’d probably use them for a Quilts of Valor quilt. I’m taking a break from sewing a QoV quilt now. I cut 196 1.5″ squares and 30 3″ squares last night and I’m sewing them to 49 strips to make sashing and sawtooth star cornerstones for a string quilt. Lots of sewing, but, our soldiers are worth it.

  94. Cat says:

What a great giveaway. I would love either set. So many possibilities. Love your storage ideas and your quilts. Hugs.

  95. Anya says:

I’d make a Project Linus quilt — preferably with the 5″ squares, but I wouldn’t turn down the 2″ ones either. Thanks for the chance!

  96. Shirley says:

At the moment I’m only collecting fabric. Once I have enough I’ll decide what to do with them.

  97. I love to make postage stamp quilts with 2″ squares – just putting together a reverse Irish Chain with 2″ (on blog). I have found a new love of the disappearing 4-patch using 5″ squares, so if I won I would love the larger squares for this.

  98. Debra says:

I think i would make a charity quilt. This is my year for giving unto other as one day I might need their help!

  99. Debra says:

  100. Carol H. says:

Wow! That’s a lot of cutting. How many times did you have to replace your blades?
    LOL.

  101. Chiska says:

I feel like I should say, “Hi, my name is Chiska, and I can’t live without getting more fabric.” It’s a problem. I have recently discovered that I also love cutting squares. Thanks for the tips on organzing! That will be a big help.

  102. Heidi Ross says:

yeah more fabric. I love fabric.

  108. Mary says:

Fabric, you gotta love it:) Little quilts would do nicely for those 5″ squares but right now making some squares for Quilt of Valor. Thanks for giving.

  109. Ohh, nothing like fabric to perk me up! I just love the five inch squares, I can just picture that lovely red cardinal on the bottom left of your photo, right smack in the middle of a block! Thanks for the opportunity!

  110. Janet in NY says:

I love scraps- esp when prewashed and precut! Frankly- either group would be fine with me. I have shoeboxes of strips in various sizes, another of 2″ squares, and tons of novelty squares in 4 1/2″ and 6 1/2″, great when I just want to make something for donation. The only thing in my life that is organized is fabric, showing where my priorities are.

  111. sarahinstitches@hotmail.com says:

The last thing I need to do is try to win even more fabric – but then I guess that does define me as a quilter doesn’t it! I have a single Irish chain nearly assembled all from 1 1/2″ squares that made 3″ nine-patch units. I have MANY 2″ squares for colorwash projects. Someday I hope to have grandchildren, so I think I need to start collecting I-Spy squares. And that is not even counting all the yardage I have… And don’t ask about my UFOs – whole galaxies of aliens are visiting my home. Thanks for the contest. Sarah

  112. Linda says:

Thank you for the opportunity to win squares that are ready to go. I can’t think of a better prize! My fabrics would love to meet your fabrics.

  113. GG says:

Your 2 inch Treasure quilt is just amazing!!! Wow. I can’t imagine doing such a project on that scale. What a great job.
For me, as I age, bigger pieces are easier to work with. How fun that would be to win the giveaway!

You inspired me to begin collecting my own 2″ and 1″ squares. Thank you! have you ever tried a 1″postage stamp quilt??? Would love to win the drawing.

    • Greetings, Judy, who has been a blog follower from the very beginning! Thanks!

Actually, I have been cutting many of my 2″ squares into quarters, and have a bag of 1″ squares tempting me. Not enough for a quilt, perhaps a lap quilt, but they will keep until I am ready to tackle them.

Two years ago one of the blue ribbon quilts at the MN State Fair was a 1″ square postage stamp quilt, hand pieced, hand quilted, every corner perfect, and full bed-sized. It was stunning! I went home and started cutting down some two inchers right away…but I will machine piece, and all my corners will not be perfect. Which is ok with me!

  117. Boy oh boy!! I have been SLOWLY cutting some 2 inch squares but have fallen quite behind! I would love yours!!!!!

  118. Nancy Sue says:

I love the set of the little squares. Such eye candy! It’s like reading a really good poem, and seeing something different each time.

  119. Kristy Lawrence says:

I just found your giveaway. Summer is close and I have a desire to make some quilts this summer. I want to try hand quilting and want something to try it on. I like your thoughts in this blog. Thank you for writing.

Easy Piecy will now be my name for what might be enons. Words cannot say how grateful I am to have found a way to incorporate all of variety she has bestowed me. 126. Bernie Hall says:

I’ve only made a few quilts over my sewing lifespan . Now that I am retired I try to piece every day. I just discovered your site and am amazed at all these little squares! If a were lucky enough to win I would really enjoy the 5″ set. I just saw a friend demonstrate sewing a 5″ four patch together then cutting 1 1/2″ from the center lines and turning the rectangles 180 degrees. Then she sewed it back together and it looked wonderfully intricate. I don’t have much of a stash so this would be a thrill and a blessing to me.

  127. pat says:

I think they are very pretty I also have been quilting but have just started would love to have the collection to help me out. thanks for showing them would love to win.

  128. Christine Kidney says:

Hi! A professional square cutter is what I need. I want to make my first quilt. I can’t find layer cakes in patriotic colors…I mean enough variety. I am planning to go to Joann fabric to get a variety of fabric. But that means I now have to cut it. I sweat everytime I have to square the fabric, and was hoping you could help? Do you suggest I buy fat quarters, or choose from bolts? If I picked bolts, how much should I ask for to make (2) 10″ squares? I thank you for any time you could give me. Thanks, chris

    • I would suggest FQ’s from which you would get two 10×10″ squares and have scraps for another project. If you buy off the bolt, you need to buy 1/3 yard and you could get four 10×10″ squares and have some scrap for other projects.

  129. Nina says:

I’m starting to fussy cut an ispyquilt quilt for my son. If you’re still collecting id love to do a swap with you!!:)
